Partycheap.com sells 12ft. of rubberized barb for $4.60.

They even have it in non-rusted silver if that suits your fancy.

I used it on one of my projects and I'm quite happy with the way it turned out.

If the wire spikes don't look sharp enough to your liking, you could always snip them at an angle with a pair of sissors, which is what I did.

            Or make it yourself?

Buy 16 gauge wire, tie rubber bands every so many inches, cut them after they are tied to leave the ends pointing out, spray paint silver , or not. This is what a Hollywood production did here in Mount Carroll and it filmed great!
How close will anyone really be looking at it?

That's a really good idea. I may do that 'cause it sounds like a pretty decent alternative.

                  barbed wire

                  Jim Warfeild is right.

What we have done is take brown 14 gage wire, it comes in different shades of brown.
Take 2 wires and put one end in a vise and the other end in a corless drill. Spin the drill to get the wire to wrap to a twist you desire and then do the rubber band deal.
I may want to note that we striped the ends so we could hold the twist with solder in a few places.
