  • Covid-19 Haunted House Guidance Plan For Parks and Recreational Facilities

I encourage all haunted house owners to share a common goal to be prepared for dealing with Covid-19 safety guidelines. Reach out to all the local haunts around you and share this plan if they need one. If one haunted house makes the news of not preparing it can be open season on all haunts in your market by the bloodthirsty news. My advice if the news media wants an interview is just reference your plan! Every state has its own guidelines, so make sure you read up on your mandates. Click here to search your states resources

WHY HAUNTED ATTRACTIONS ARE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MASS GATHERINGS It is important to remember the difference between haunted attractions and other venues for mass gatherings such as sports arenas, movie theaters, and concerts:

    1. Capacity can be reduced/managed to allow for appropriate social distancing.

    2. Seating positions on tram or hayrides and attractions are controlled by employees.

    3. Exposure time is limited. Guests generally move throughout their experience, much like in an inter-city district or zone. The guests are not sitting in a single location, elbow-to-elbow, for an extended period.

    4. A large percentage of attraction attendance is made up of family members and others who live in the same home and thus do not need to be physically distanced from each other.

It's not a perfect plan for everyone, so make changes where you need to to fit your own haunts needs. There are lots of links in the document from audio and video clips to promote safety at your park to graphics for signage, pretty much everything you need to be as safe as you can be. Having hand sanitizer station throughout your park is required. We have year round attractions here at Kersey Valley, so it was an easy add using Cintas that already provided us with all our sanitation station stand needs. Get a quote for your seasonal needs from your local store. www.cintas.com

I took information provided by the Fear Factory in Salt Lake and information from the CDC website. This plan has no logos or any haunts name on it, so you can just print it and use it. I have given credit to the Fear Factory for using parts of their plan, so if you share a modified version please give them credit.

Good Luck and I hope you can open and make a profit despite the disasters of 2020! What's next a cat 5 hurricane?

      Thanks for the thread Tony.

Guys before I get started look at so called haunt experts look and see what they're suggesting you do ... OMG
      https://www.iaapa.org/news/funworld/...ra-coronavirus

He says you should pen up all your guests and give them clues to solve. He also suggests closing down your haunted house every hour to a cleaning, have monsters do it in costume so the customers can see it. WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT?

How do you do that exactly? Maybe he can come teach me!

Another article a different guy suggests getting rid of chainsaws like that is going to help. HUH?

Bottom line we need to take the reigns here and fast! There are some really really dumb people talking for ALL OF US!

Haunted Houses owners and operators aren't theme parks. We have different issues.

Here is my plan and keep in mind haunted houses are basically ONE MAN BANDS! When you the owner are in charge of 5 million things going on you have to pick your battles. We need a plan that address what can or will actually be enforced.

            Here are some suggestions:

            1) Have a meeting with your top actors and pick their brain. I'm doing this next week. Find out their expectations learn their ideas and get their feedback to your plan.

            2) 3D glasses / Squeeze walls: stuff like this just eliminate for 2020 or make sure no customer gets the same pair of 3D glasses. For some of you trying to save money just eliminate 3D glasses all together.

            3) Scareboxes: We have these in ALL of our haunted houses. The actors can jump out and scare people from inside scareboxes. Remember your actors jump out the customers go backwards. Actors can no longer stay and mingle they need to scare and get back to their scarezone/scarebox.

            4) Ending all roamers don't let actors roam around. By having a meeting with your actors and telling them point blank you want to work you stick to this spot and don't leave. Actors won't be mingling with other actors this way.

            5) Assign masks / costumes to an actor. They have the same spot all year long... the actor is in charge of their own mask and costume. No mask is used by any other actor.

            6) Pay extra staff to clean costumes and masks after each night of operation.

            7) Post warnings and waivers on your website and print these warnings to inform customers of risks.

            8) Encourage all guests to wear masks, or simple require all guests to wear masks. If you go this route you should purchase those NOW!

            9) Add washing stations to your que lines.

            10) Do temp checks for all employees as they show up for work. Require all staff members read a waiver informing them of risks and rules such as do not come to work if running a fever.

            11) Reduce staff to your lowest level EVER! The Darkness operated with up to 90 actors last year, this year we're going 50 on weekdays and 65 on weekends. This will be MAX!

            12) If your'e a screampark with multiple attractions consider CLOSING some of the attractions which will help you reduce staff and time customers spend at the park. We're doing this at Creepyworld.

            13) Timed ticketing is an option but it could drastically hurt ticket sales but customers might like to know the exact time they could enter. Fearticket has this feature. www.fearticket.com

            14) DO NOT STOP LETTING PEOPLE IN THE DOOR... in other words speed up how many people go into the attraction. Don't allow big long lines to pile up to get in keep the lines moving.

            15) If you run one of these haunts where you stop people and do acting gigs, END THAT you need to be a straight SCARE Haunted House in 2020.

            17) Purchase a lot of NOISE makers in 2020 so your actors can scare from a distance if that what they feel comfortable doing. You can buy all kinds on amazon.

            18) END ALL ACTOR MEETINGS in person. Grab everyone's email and blast out updates or record videos and upload to an actor facebook group.

            19) KEEP CHAINSAWS its the ultimate social distance tool

            20) Pay your staff electronically.

            21) Buy a product called MICROBAN start stocking up NOW. When you see it for sale buy!

            22) Stock up on Lysol if you can find it buy it.

            23) Stock up on a lot of hand sanitizer if you see it buy it.

            24) AVOID THE MEDIA ... do not bring the spotlight upon yourself. Just keep your head down and do what you gotta do! If the national media calls you turn down the call or tell them to call me. Seriously avoid the media in 2020.

On the marketing side... cut marketing and focus on people who've bought tickets in the past. Limit your financial risks we need you back in 2020.

            I'll post more soon!

New Safety Guidelines: Post the initial spread of Covid-19
These rules apply to The Darkness - Creepyworld - Lemp and St Louis Escape
Actors who are sick with fever or cold/flu symptoms etc. will not be allowed to work. We will be implementing temperature checks upon arrival prior to sign in.
Unfortunately, you cannot work if you have Asthma or an autoimmune disease or are taking a medication that could lower your immunity. There are more than 100 autoimmune diseases. Ten common autoimmune disease are Rheumatoid Arthritis, Graves, Lupus, Crohns, Multiple Sclerosis, Type 1 Diabetes, Psoriasis, Celiac Disease, Vitiligo, Alopecia. When you have an autoimmune disorder, your immune system does not always distinguish between healthy tissue and potentially harmful antigens. As a result, the body sets off a reaction that destroys normal tissues. Additionally, many of the drugs that treat these diseases can trigger changes that can potentially confuse the immune system.
If you live with someone who has an autoimmune disease, you should not work the haunted house industry unless you can find temporary housing elsewhere during the 30+ days of operation, plus 14 days after the final operating date. This is additionally true if you live with someone over the age of 60, someone who is ill, someone on a ventilator, or anyone with breathing issues.
Common haunted house scare tactics include squeeze walls and black mazes. Until further notice, we will completely eliminate the use of squeeze walls and add easier exiting measures inside black mazes.
We are eliminating the position title ROAMERS to avoid bumping into or getting too close to customers, so the welfare of the actors will now be checked on by Section Leaders & Managers. We will only assign 1-person per scare box or per scare window to avoid bumping into or getting too close to co-workers. Roamers, tenure -actors, top-actors, and actors who commit to EVERY DAY of the season will be given first priority to choose their scare-box or scare assignment. If you work every day, no other actor should be inside your space to scare on any day of the season. We will be implementing in-scene breaks where possible, again to avoid getting too close to customers and/or co-workers.
This will be an ALL MASK season. The more covered you are, the more there is distance between actor and customer. So, you will be assigned a mask for the entire season and that mask will be used by no one else all season long. We have several mask types, made from several different materials, so if you are allergic to a material, be sure you are assigned one that works for you. If your mask needs eye-black, you will be provided your own black makeup tube, all your own. Masks will be labeled. We will use MICROBAN SPRAY (or other germ-killing spray) daily to keep mask hooks and other surfaces sanitized. MICROBAN kills 99.9% of germs, including cold & flu viruses, for up to 24 hours and keeps killing bacteria even after multiple touches! Since a larger number of masks will be in use, you must notify us immediately upon noticing even a small tear so we can correct it asap. We cannot risk a mask going out of commission. If you want/need an exception to the new mask rule, requests must be made to Management (not section leads) in advance. Pre-approval is required. Assignment of costumes will be handled similarly. You will now be allowed to take your costume home with you (but not your mask).
All customers will be asked to wear masks upon entering the building and encouraged to use them throughout the entire show. If a customer arrives without a mask, we will have disposable masks available to them. We will also have disposable masks available for employees, plus see-through face shields for cashiers and security. Additionally, gloves will be reimbursed for anyone who prefers. (OReilly Auto Parts has inexpensive black gloves, as suggested in actor meeting.)
Customers will be asked to sanitizer their hands before entering the building.
The use of sound-pedals and loudspeakers for booming sound scares will be used to implement distancing scares. Individually, actors should consider voice-amplifiers too.
Lower actor staff will be used immediately at all locations. We're preferring to hire only staff members who can work the entire season.
Actors who get pre-approval for make up must do their make up at home and show up ready to work. We will reimburse for make up supplies if pre-approved.
Actors must show up already in costume for work. Actors are responsible for their masks and costume. Loss of paycheck will result if costume and masks aren't returned.
Pre-Approved actors can take their masks home but must sign a document agreeing to be responsible for replacement if lost.
All actors with makeup must wear a breathing masks and would have to theme the outside to look scary otherwise you must wear a mask.
Scarebox: Any haunt where there are scarebox they must be used to create a barrier between you and customers with no exception.
Actors can't report to work more than one hour and fifteen before showtime. If you're coming completely dressed for work must arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to showtime.
All staff members will be paid digitally either thru paycards or direct deposit
All staff members must wash hands prior to working or wear gloves.
Each actor at the end of each session must spray and clean their own masks and hang their masks to prevent any other staff member from touching.
NO ACTOR meetings are allowed after closing time. Any actors meetings will be done via facebook group by us posting a video (you must join) or prior to working. Once we close each night staff members must clean their masks and EXIT the property within 15 minutes of checking out.
3D Glasses will NOT be reused rather collected and reboxed and given back to management. Each time a new box of glasses runs you replace with all-new
Each night your section of the haunt must be sprayed with disinfectants including anything customers or actors might touch including hanging bodies and props. This must be done PRIOR to opening. Section leaders or security must spray down their haunt.
No sharing of drinks or food. You must bring your OWN water bottles. None will be provided to ensure safety for all actors.
All actors must sign a waiver agreeing to all the terms.
Any actors who taunt or use lines with customers must be at least six feet away otherwise we only encourage scaring customers from the side and scare forward. DO NOT SCARE ANY CUSTOMERS FROM THE FRONT or follow customers thru the maze. Following customers thru the maze would only result in walking back to your starting point and encountering new customers face to face.
HPI will reimburse with pre-approval any make up supplies or safety masks or gloves you might require to work.
Upon arrival do NOT enter the actor room or zones until you've had your temperature checked. DO NOT ENTER WITHOUT THE CHECK! All temp check staff members must be wearing gloves and mask.
All sections leaders must disinfect their sections props and contact points or get confirmation this has been completed before allowing your actors into their areas.
Any concerns from staff must be reported to management or owners immediately.
Actors can and are encouraged to wear gloves and breathing masks at all times while on property.

I posted a new video to youtube yesterday... check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wf7DdB84nCg

Within a couple hours I got this reply

What’re the precautions you’ll be taking for COVID-19? I’m HEAVILY interested but I’m also interested in staying safe and preserving the Darkness

Never got a question like this before. Clearly people will want to know your plan in writing.

I'm posting our complete plan along with our waiver. Feel free to copy and use or change however you like.

New Safety Guidelines Darkness and Creepyworld 2020 (covid-19)
All employees will be asked to wash their hands upon arrival and required to wear a face covering at all times while on duty. All employees will be required to sign a release/waiver that states they may be exposed to COVID-19 while working at our haunted houses. Our goal is to keep you safe so we need everyone to follow our guidelines.
Actors who are sick with fever or cold/flu symptoms etc. will not be allowed to work. We will be implementing temperature checks. Do not enter the actor area without a temp check. If you can't act you must find someone who can take your place. Each of our attractions needs a SUPPORT system of people you can call to cover your shifts.

You cannot work if you have Asthma or other respiratory illnesses/issues. You are additionally asked not to work if you have an autoimmune disease or are taking a medication that could lower your immunity. There are more than 100 autoimmune diseases. Ten common autoimmune disease are Rheumatoid Arthritis, Graves, Lupus, Crohns, Multiple Sclerosis, Type 1 Diabetes, Psoriasis, Celiac Disease, Vitiligo, Alopecia. When you have an autoimmune disorder, your immune system does not always distinguish between healthy tissue & potentially harmful antigens. As a result, the body sets off a reaction that destroys normal tissues, & many of the drugs that treat these diseases can trigger changes that can potentially confuse the immune system. We do not know your medical conditions you must report this upon time of application.

If you live with someone who has an autoimmune disease, you should not work this haunted house season unless you can find temporary housing elsewhere during the 30+ days of operation, plus 14 days after the final operating date. This is additionally true if you live with someone over the age of 60, someone who is ill, someone on a ventilator, or anyone with breathing issues.

EVERY ACTOR MUST WORK WITHIN a scare zone and NOT cross over into another actors area. Furthermore all actors must not follow customers using lines, all actors are required to scare customers and get back to their scarebox. If you're working in large outdoor spaces you can scare customers with chainsaws but you must keep 6 feet distance.

We will label 2-way radios specific to their operator to decrease possible cross-contamination. Each night if you're given a radio you must disinfect the radio as a double precaution safety measure.
This will be an ALL MASK season, as masks provide an additional layer between actor and customer. You will be assigned a mask for the entire season and that mask will be used by no one else all season long. Upon returning the mask you must clean it before turning the mask back in and put your TAG on the mask. We have several mask types, made from several different materials, so if you are allergic to a material, be sure you are assigned one that works for you. If your mask needs eye-black, you will be provided your own black makeup tube, all your own. Masks will be labeled and will be sanitized nightly.

We have also purchased 100 monster facemasks these can be purchased for $20.00. If an actor can show they can use the facemasks and apply their own make up at home we may approve this costume.
You may request an exception to the new mask rule; requests must be made to Management , not Section Leads. Approval is not likely, so you may need to sit this season out. Pre-approval is required, and you must agree to arrive in your makeup already applied. No makeup artists will be on duty. For any actors who are approved for make-up but not able to apply from home, we will consider a make-up station assignment in the actor room for self-application. On site, no one is to apply makeup to anyone other than self.

Assignment of costumes will be handled similarly. You will be allowed to take your costume home with you (but not mask). Actors will be expected to show up for work already in costume. This will cut down on the need to show up early. We will create a new actor break area behind the building. Actors will not be allowed to roam in the open areas anymore. At Darkness you can roam outside ONLY behind the old HIVE building. There is no more HIVE so this can serve as a social distance location. At Creepyworld we have already created an outdoor area for actors to hang out. Hayride actors should only mobilize in the hayride.

All customers will be asked to wear masks upon entering the building and encouraged to use them throughout the entire show. If a customer arrives without a mask, we will have disposable masks available to them. We will also have disposable masks available for employees, plus see-through face shields for cashiers and security. Additionally, gloves will be reimbursed for anyone who prefers.Rubber gloves can be purchased at home depot.
Customers will be asked to sanitizer their hands before entering the building. Entrance security personnel will spray sanitize guests hands, plus wash stations will be supplied.
We will not be recycling 3D glasses for TerrorVisions or at Creepyworld. We will either give each guest a new pair or not use them at all. 3D glasses must be collected organized and rubber banded and then returned back in its original box to management. Those glasses will be stored away. Anyone who collects 3D glasses must wear rubber gloves and wear a mask.

We will expand the queue line area to allow for greater social distancing. We will discontinue the practice of accepting someone’s phone from them to take photo-op pictures for 2020.
Actors are no longer asked to get up close or in face of guests to scare or deliver lines. The use of sound-pedals and loudspeakers for booming sound scares will be used to implement distancing scares. Individually, actors should consider voice-amplifiers too. Noise makers and shaker cans will be provided; no one should enter their scene without one. As always, DO NOT TOUCH the guests. All actors who want to use their own scare devices must get this approved from management. If you use one of our scare devices upon check out you must clean them yourself before putting them away.

Lower actor staff will be used immediately. We will have very few after hour meetings so actors can leave efficiently and immediately upon sign-out. The Darkness will only allow 55 PAID ACTORS. Creepyworld will allow 75 paid actors. All actors not on the schedule can show up and jump onto the paid schedule if someone does show, or you can volunteer act. We're preferring to hire actors who can make every single night of the schedule. If you can't make every night we're requiring each actors to find someone to cover their shift. All actors are encourage to create snapchat groups of people on the part time list and find people who want to work for you.
Absolutely no offensive behavior or comments will be tolerated, to guests or other employees.

If you learn of or see any dangerous behavior, sexual misconduct, or unsafe covid related conditions you must report this to management immediately. YOU MUST CLEAN YOUR OWN COSTUME - MASK AND LABEL YOUR EQUIPMENT NIGHTLY BEFORE LEAVING. Upon end of shift accomplish these tasks sign out and leave. No actors are allowed to show up more than 60 minutes prior to opening.

YOU MUST BRING OUR OWN WATER OR JUGS OR SNACKS. Each scarezone is your responsibility to keep clean. Trash must be dumped nightly this is a team effort. WE WILL SUPPLY HAND sanitizer and spray bottles with disinfectant you may use to spray any props in your area. Each SCAREZONE must have a fire extinguisher and again you can bring any food or drinks you want must be located ONLY inside your scare area. Actors may also wear gloves and masks inside the masks.
All pay will be done electronic NO CHECKS! You must correctly fill out all paperwork. REMEMBER YOUR SAFETY IS PRIORITY #1. HELP US KEEP THE HAUNTS OPEN AND KEEP ALL STAFF MEMBERS SAFE!

I'm going to be outlining a few more things in the next few days. I've been super super sick in bed for the past 7 days. I'm not kidding. Hopefully I'm going to get back in the saddle and post some more updates.

I think we've come up with a really good plan.

HEY FOLKS... look out for PPP ROUND 2. Lets hope the DEMS will get something done with TRUMP but they're planning on a ROUND 2.

This should HELP EVERY SINGLE HAUNTED HOUSE VENDOR! Apparently this round is based on if you've lost 50% or more of your business. That will apply to ALL HAUNT VENDORS!

Depending on how they word this you could apply for your haunted house as well.

                            Keep your fingers crossed!

I don’t know how many of your subscribe to news hits but I do...

EVERYTHING is starting to turn towards HALLOWEEN and Haunted Houses now. I see at least 5 or 6 new stories about how Halloween should be cancelled, haunted houses shouldn’t open.

Here is an article TODAY in Detroit talking about is Halloween over. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/2020/08/07/halloween-canceled-costume-stores-and-candy-makers-face-scary-realities/3321375001/

Another story about Screams in Dallas NOT OPENING https://www.waxahachietx.com/news/20200807/screams-cancels-2020-season

Here is what is going to happen ... you’re going to open and someone is going to try and VILIFY you for doing so. Take Screams in Dallas the media and some of the public will say if they’re closing why didn’t the rest? They’ll say you don’t care about safety, you don’t care about stopping the spread.

If you open you need to be prepared for this reality!

It doesn’t matter that you have 30,000 people willing to come into your door, what matters these days is what the minority thinks, which turns into local news stories, or then become national stories. Opening your haunts you face the reality of being totally turned into a villain!

We’re still waiting on SIX FLAGS... one of the ONLY theme parks yet to announce open or closed. I’ll be interested to see what they do.

Either way here are some tips from my perspective.

                              1) AVOID ALL MEDIA even if its positive. Just focus on your core audience and keep your hand under the sand.

                              2) Marketing should be directed only at people who’ve come before and leave out the rest.

                              3) I would re-think doing billboards this year because you’re broadcasting to everyone YOU ARE OPEN! Again focus just on the core audience thru digital.

                              4) Make EVERYONE who attends your haunts WEAR MASKS. One photo of people NOT wearing masks could get you totally shut down!

                              5) Limit Operation days to JUST FRIDAY SATURDAY and SUNDAY ... look you’re just trying to get your bills paid here just like everyone else. If you go outside those three days you’re making a GRAVE mistake! Why? Really simple you need to give five days between opening in case anyone does actually get sick. That would be like you quarantine your staff, and your haunt. I say five days because you open FRIDAY night its like a 5th day.

If you want to make a daily run do it the last week only! I’m telling you don’t open more than Friday – Sunday because its not about customers at this point its about trying to keep your staff healthy.

                              6) When or if you’re confronted by the media, direct them to a page on your website where you have the MAIN safety precautions posted like YOU MUST WEAR A MASK - YOU HAVE SHORTENED THE SEASON - YOU’RE CLEANING THE HAUNT – WASH STATIONS - ETC.
