I agree with gadget-evilusions opinions that the only proper and safe way to run this prop is utilizing pneumatic cylinders. Having said that, I built this prop some 15 years ago using a higher quality bicycle pump as the pneumatic cylinder and it works well to this day. I also limited the travel of the trash can lid by using 2 pieces of cable attached to the pump handle so that the pump never reached its full extended position when activated....as a safety mechanism. Every year that I used this prop I was concerned however about possible cylinder failure. Spend the few extra bucks to get a good cylinder and you will enjoy many worry free scares. This is a great prop!
Fright Props has a full line of pneumatic cylinders and solenoids.

I am sorry to say, that this style of prop building does not really ever provide satisfactory results. Luckily with the amount of air your losing, the PVC never really pressurises and explodes. You should never pressurize PVC pipe with air pressure.
It would be best to build the prop using metal, a real pneumatic cylinder, and a solenoid valve that is designed for use with air pressure.
If you are not comfortable with designing and building your self, there are alot of options out there for premade kits, and devices. Here is also a good how to for building one http://www.instructables.com/id/Tras...-Kit-and-MAKE/

Need help with Trash Can Trauma
Hi guys,
My wife and I just bought our first home in April, so I can finally build the Halloween props I've always dreamed of. I wanted to start this year with my first attempt at a Trash Can Trauma, but I'm having a bit of trouble.
I'm using the PVC and sprinkler solenoid method, but I'm just not generating enough force to push open the top of the can. I've got a few images and a little video narrating my troubles. I'm pretty sure the answer I'm going to receive is that I've got too much air leaking from the system as I can't get the can to flip open at 80psi of air. However, if anyone see's anything else that looks glaringly wrong, I'd appreciate a bit of help.
Thanks,
Horseman.
