Any haunts that use a 1-800 phone number rather than a local #??

I use to have a toll free # in another business a few years ago. Cost me $4.95 per month on my phone bill. All it did was transfer calls to my local phone #. That was it. No limits on minutes. Nothing. Of course the toll free number and my local service were both provided by AT&T as well.

The question would be....why?????
Is your haunt located where the majority of your audience is in a different area code??
With the proliferation of cell phones, minutes usually include long distance, so again, what is the need
for an 800 number?
If you have a large number of customers that are located in a different area code, another option is to get
Vonage or Magic Jack number. You can request a number in any area code. Then say if you already have
an info number (a local number with an answering machine) you could just forward the Vonage, Magic Jack
to that number. Does that make sense?

1800 numbers are on their way out for local business...
Once cell phones became the staple of everyday life with unlimited minutes and long distance, the 1800 number died for local businesses. First, 1800 numbers charge YOU not the caller for each call. Second, a lost teenager trying to find your haunt won't stop at the local payphone (what payphone) to call and get directions. We canceled our 1800 number a long time ago, and we consolidated our haunt telephone traffic with our daytime businesses. If your web site is detailed enough, you can also eliminate the need for 20 questions from phone callers.
Very interested in hearing more about google voicemail - thanks for the tip.

Side note- 800 story
When we started our haunt in 2007 we tried to get vanity numbers. We had no clue how to go about finding one, so we were cold calling numbers that we thought would work for us. I don't remember the entire list but we tried 1-800-hayride... Well... you have to find out the rest for yourself.

why? because it adds professionalism and ease of contact and....
We use freedomvoice for $9.95 per month plus a few cents per minute. Gets some traffic and allows us to put announcements on it for info that helps reduce the questions from callers that may not be near or have internet.
The reason for Rich is that we draw customers from up to 50-70 miles easily and that menas 8, yes eight different area codes that customers are calling from..
