  • Scares in the Parking/Line Cheap Shot or Fair Game?

This past year I took the position of scaring people in the parking lot, in line and after they exited the house.
How it worked was like this

PARKING LOT:I would wait at the back of the line while a car drove by so they would not see me. I would then follow along beside the car crouched below the windows so they could not see me. The boy scout parking the car would tell me where the girls/moms or most likely to be scared were sitting and I would move over to that side of the car so when they opened their door I would lunge in screaming at them.

IN LINE: The line would go from the front entrance all the way back to the parking lot between two rows of pic-nick tables. What I would do to scare the people in line was sneak up and stand right behind them, my face right next to theirs looking at them which was great because in everyone else the their group would see me and freak out and the person I was right next to would have no idea why.

EXIT: The last thing in our house was a hallway where you gt chased out by a chainsaw. Once you go through the door you are back outside close to where you came in, all you do is walk 10 feet and turn right at the wall or go left and do a interview. However since the last scare was a chainsaw I could hear it from the parking lot so I would hide behind the wall and scare them again after they got outside.

All of these scares were extremely effective especially when people were getting in and out of their cars. However people always complained on how it was cheap or they were not expecting it or how it was unfair etc....I really want to know your thoughts, comments, do you think it will effect overall business?

..one questiion, Did anybody half-way out of their car react by hitting their head on the car door or the car roof?
Slip on a wet parking surface and fall because they were unexpectedly scared there?
If not then maybe you really know what you are doing and everything is fine...but it is fun getting them when they think it won't be happening.
So when the tour is over and they go for the "interveiw" are they being asked questions about the experince they just had? Do people ever complain much about your scares? If they are going to complain I would think they would be doing that if I understood the interveiw remark.

Dont scare them to much before they pay. They could chicken out and the haunt will lose money. The same is true for the line, scare them in line to get in but not in line to pay.
At the exit is fine, the scare is gravy. I like my outside characters to concentrate on the line to get into the show. Not so much its annoying, but to keep them entertained and on their toes.

Yeah, Allen... you wouldn't know anything about scaring people away before they pay now, would you? LOL!

It's true what has been said. Wait until AFTER they have paid and the refund in non-negotiable!! I too scared guests in the lines and such and too many "chickens" turned away before purchasing tickets because I scared them JUST that bad

I think Netherworld has perfected this art. Ben has a treasure trove of things going on the minute you arrive on the property and is fascinating how you can see and experience a lot just by being there. But on the other hand, if your going to do this I believe there is a fine line where to much is too much and your actor should be competent enough to know where that line is.

Thanks everybody great advice and as far as I know by the time they get in the parking lot they have already paid. The house is located on a camp ground so I believe they pay at the campground entrance or at the lodge, either way they have already paid by the time they get to me.

You Do Want To Scare Some Away!

One night a lonely guy appeared here, bought a ticket, was going to go through the house alone.
I said something to which he replied:"You know psychology!" I said quickly, "No! Psychology knows Me!"
He got timid and quiet then said, "I don't think I want to go through your house anymore...."
I refunded his money, later I discover this guy is a trully convicted Nut-Case!
He was guilty of all kinds of potentially mean, nasty and totally aggressive actions involving sharp, bladed objects, along with numerous vandalistic episodes of random property destruction on a large magnitude.
If any of you reading this thinks I handled this wrong, I'll send him a free ticket to Your Haunt!
                  HAHAHAHAAH!
                  Sometimes I'm just lucky.

                    Good question

This is why I dig this forum. I feel like a vet already from what I learn here. lol

I feel like I am doing something right after reading this. My responsiblilties cover the lot, ticketing and scaring the hell out of them on the way out.

Early in the night I do the "Myers" thing. Let myself be seen in the lot from a distance, duck out of sight and get them again after the purchase is made. I keep my distance from the fresh meat but once they pay anything goes and the owner loves it. I have free roam of any of the 5 ticketing lines.
I will terrorize them on the way to their cars. I never run since I let my spot light do the work. I've heard quite a few returns from people reminding me of my parking lot antics and how fun it was.
