  • just need some ideas!!

hey i am back for some more Q&A's

well the first thing is this...

how do you guys do your hiring?? as in.. is there a interview?? or do you hire all the people that come in the door?? i just need some ideas on that. do you guys give a actors real "job" interview and then a 2 min. skit after that??

and then here is my other Q&A..

what do you guys do if there is a fight in your haunt?? now here is the fun part about it.. what if the fight was with 2 of your actors?? there fighting between one another?? OR what if a fight is with your actor and a costumer??

What do you guys do if that happens??

    And if this came up..

if your actor has drugs on them or they came to work high off of drugs??
    what do you do??

have you ever run in to this??

if your actor is "making out" with another actor or you run in to a costumer "making out" with another costumer??

how do you handle that?? (that's what she said..LOL!!!!)

thanks for taking the time to read this!!!

    This is difficult.

    Hiring.
Hire two or three people for each spot you need to fill, then see who shows up.
    Think I'm kidding?
Way too many people are good at simply flapping their yap with nothing to back it up, like truth, punctuality, a real aptitude for the task at hand.
Several years ago there was a national news story:"What is the most common fear?"
    The answer was :"Public Speaking".
If your haunt actor has to actually communicate more than a growl, you might find out quickly that they lied to get the job and they really can't do it because of this problem.
You won't really know if you have bet on a winner or an also-ran til after a night or two.
Also-ran's can become winners if they stick with it, there is another problem. Too many look for any excuse to quit. Sometimes this may happen because they have their own personal, frivolous ideas of what goes on in haunting.
Of course some very good helpers may quit if the haunt gets extremely slammed by a huge mass of customers and the workload becomes impossible and no care is given to the employee's needs and greed and not wishing to turn away any customer overtakes the actual ability of the show to handle "X" number of patrons per/hour or per/night. Sometimes this responsibilty falls higher-up in the command structure.
There, I have just begun to illustrate a few of the points of consideration.
I don't really do any of these things very well, myself.

      My thoughts

how do you guys do your hiring?? as in.. is there a interview?? or do you hire all the people that come in the door?? i just need some ideas on that. do you guys give a actors real "job" interview and then a 2 min. skit after that??

In every interview I have done or given, There is just talking first about me and/or them. Getting to know each other and the "vision". Not always is everyone hired, it is based on what the "vision" is and if they fall into that piece needed for puzzle. Different things are needed from ticket takers, to que line to ticket sales to costume area to acting, so where could that person be needed the most. After talking there is some performance given, maybe something that was done before or maybe a special "gift" like for example, I knew one girl that all she could do was scream like bloody hell. This way you can see where this person would fit into your "vision" or maybe not fit at all.

what do you guys do if there is a fight in your haunt?? now here is the fun part about it.. what if the fight was with 2 of your actors?? there fighting between one another?? OR what if a fight is with your actor and a costumer??

Only fights I have had have been with actors and patrons. Thank god, I haven't had the crap between actors. If the fight is with the patron, they are removed ASAP from the haunt by staff and/or police and escorted off the site. Sometimes depending on the patron, they could even end up in jail. As far as between actors, I have seen one disagreement happen, but it was after hours and handled outside maturely. But if the fight happend during hours, I would remove them ASAP and depending on the issues, may or may not have them back to work again.

if your actor has drugs on them or they came to work high off of drugs??
      what do you do??

All of the actors know PRIOR to the house even opening first day that we are a drug free site. If drugs are found on them they could be arrested and fired. WAY to much crap could happen to the haunt if action is not taken quickly and swiftly. If someone came drunk or high and it was known or noticed, I would send them home and not have them work that night with a warning that if they want to work here they would better stop or don't bother coming back. Again way to many things could happen to the haunt if not taken care of.

if your actor is "making out" with another actor or you run in to a costumer "making out" with another costumer??

Oh god, this was how I was "broken" in as operater one year for a haunt. I couldn't find 2 of my actors one night and after a period of time I finally thought to check a closet and sure enough there they were. I pulled them from the haunt ASAP and took them to the dressing area. They both were under 18 so I had to tell their parents because of liabilty issues. Thank god they were either about to start something or just finished, because I would have probally freaked out more if they were in the middle of it. I haven't had my older actors do that so, I think it is more with the youth that could be a problem. I know of another time were 2 actors were found in a hearse having sex behind the curtain and were removed ASAP and fired and never seen again. Again both under 18. Thats why I love having that all actors should be over 18, 21 even better. I have never had patrons stop and do anything like that. I have had them do million other different things, but never that.

All your questions have 1 basic answer to them. You are in control. It would be like any other job. You set the rules, you set the record straight if rules are broken what happens and you make everyone sign it , know it ,live it. And if they break the rules enforce the results. Working at a haunted house shouldn't be any different then working any where else. Just because its one month a year for most doesn't exempt common respect and decency to apply. It is business. And that is how you treat it.

        What If?

You tell your kid, "You can't have any chocolate before dinner."
Then you find them eating that brown addictive sweet stuff.
My Grandmother was the type who would then force you to eat 10 pounds of it at once to teach you a lesson.
...so, you catch people having intiment relations in the haunt....
"You have to do this all night long behind a plexiglass window for every group coming through the house!"
        ..a very intresting threat, huh?
Don't mind me, I have strange ways sometimes.
Maybe I got it from my Grandma?
Naw, just pose two "Buckys" and make a display of what happens if you do this and get caught!
        There, that's better.
        Sorry.
Those bones would clatter quite loudly, wouldn't they.
        hahahah!

I hope that more people talk about this kind of stuff, because it deal's with more of the undergrond of haunts... in other words "the taboo of haunted houses"
