Hello,

I know there was some discussion about doing airbrush make up after Transworld last year but I wanted to get some updated info on this. What are the best types of airbrush machines for haunters to use?

Also, what kind and where would you buy the kind of paInt to do this for make up?

And, what size or type of air compressor is standard for this, and at what psi?

I prefer using a paasche airbrush. This set comes with various needle sizes. size 5 needle is the one you would use most for airbrush makeup. These airbrushes are reliable, just make sure to take them apart and clean them! The bottles on these suckers allow for quick change, so you can keep switching colors.

As for the compressor you can buy anyone, just depends on the price you are willing to pay. Do you want a good or bad one? This one works fine...

For the air brush paints go with Ben-Nye. You cannot buy directly from the company but here is a good website to buy from. It is the liquid magicolor paint, comes in different amounts, and color. A little goes a long way. You will also need to buy Ben Nye Final seal to thin down the Magicolor paint to the consistency you want. I usually go 3 parts Magicolor paint to 2 parts Final Seal. It depends on the consistency you like dealing with.

Oh ya make sure to Keep this stuff and your work area clean. It is a bit messy. Make sure when you switch colors to first flush some brush cleaner through the air brush. keep some brush cleaner in one of the jars that I put links to above.

I have to do about 30-40 airbrush make-ups I find these items very very useful.

the above airbrush set is one you should get for basing out actors (getting them to the base color)
It costs $10 and is an external mix that means all the paint and air mixing happens at the nozzle as it is leaving the gun so no clogging. It is also single action (only one button/action push down for air and paint at the same time. This gun is crap for detail but it lays down a great base coat. I recommend having a second person do the basing out. They do not have to be trained as they are only using one button to make a person a different color. That way your artist does not waste precious detail time just applying a base color.

Is what I use the most for airbrush makeup at my show. It comes with six dual action airbrushes six bottles and an octopus type air distributor so all the airbrushes run off of one compressor. It costs $130 and is invaluable to me for the time it saves. One artist uses this set up, it saves a ton of time because to change colors on an airbrush it takes about 30 seconds or more to get the old color out of the airbrush. That is wasted time and pre-show you need every scrap of time you can get for makeup.
SCREAMS has three haunted houses that require airbrush make up I have one of these set ups for each house. Each set up has a color palette made for that house Our asylum has the six colors on the airbrush that they use, the castle has the six colors for its make up, and so on.
I Also own a pasche VL dual action airbrush. Its a great airbrush and works well. It will run you about $100. Mad Hatter gave good advice Im just saying what works for me.

I use a paasche H airbrush to do base make-ups. Most of the other make-up people use the VL. The H is just a work horse. It is really hard to clog that jewel and I abuse the hell out of it.
We use mostly thinned down Mehron Liquid Make-up. It works great, and holds up well for haunt purposes as long as you use a set spray.
We run our air brushes off the house compressor. We have an air line that runs into the make-up room and use a manifold to supply the different make-up stations with air.

As far as artists are concerned, how do you go about finding them? I guess some artists who apply cream make up would not be trained in airbrush, so is it harder to find these skilled artists?

I suggest you make your own airbrush artist by training them (allowing them to practice). A normal airbrush artist would most likely be to expensive as they have spent time acquiring skills that they frankly do not need.
Practice, looking at photos of airbrush make up, and a simple study of anatomy will help immensely. Find someone who can draw, and go from there.

I agree with Allen. Most anyone with a little artistic ability can start picking up the skills needed for air brushing pretty quickly. It just takes a little practice.

Allen what type of makeup do you usually use with the airbrush? I have used mehron before and like that just wondering what you use with the ones from harbor freight?

I use hobby store acrylics. Get the ones that are all acrylic, do not use CERAMCOAT (a brand) is not as nontoxic as the label says. Chemically the acrylic is safe on skin and it does not smell bad when atomized. I mix it roughly (depending on the temperature) 60% distilled purified water and 40% acrylic paint. I have tried several brands of the airbrush makeup and they were not for me. The water almost costs as much as the paint, but the results are great. Shelf life is my major issue, it does not kill me to throw away the acrylic mix, but the airbrush make up is to expensive to let go bad on a shelf.
I have found that red and blue will clog an airbrush the fastest so I do not bother trying to save those anymore.
